What are the biggest cybersecurity threats facing small businesses in Reno today?

Good evening, Reno! I’m Sarah Jenkins reporting live from the heart of our city. Joining me tonight is Scott Morris, a leading IT specialist here in Reno with Reno Computer Services (RCS). Scott, thanks for being with us.

“Happy to be here, Sarah,” Scott replied with a friendly smile. “Cybersecurity is a critical concern for any business today, especially small ones that might not have the resources of larger corporations.”

Cyber Security

According to a recent report by Verizon, 43% of cyberattacks target small businesses. Consequently, it’s crucial for these businesses to understand the evolving threats they face.

“Phishing attacks are incredibly common,” Scott explained. “We see them almost daily. Scammers will send emails that look legitimate, trying to trick employees into revealing sensitive information like passwords or credit card numbers.”

My own mother-in-law fell victim to a phishing scam last year. It was heartbreaking to see her lose access to her bank account. Thankfully, the bank was able to recover most of the funds, but it was a stressful experience nonetheless.

Backup And Disaster Recovery Solution

“That’s why having a strong backup and disaster recovery plan is essential,” Scott emphasized. “It acts as a safety net if your systems are compromised.”

Ordinarily, a good backup solution will allow you to quickly restore your data in case of an attack or system failure. Moreover, it can minimize downtime and prevent significant financial losses.

Data Security

I asked Scott about the best practices for small businesses to protect their data. “Strong passwords are a must,” he said.

“Businesses should also consider multi-factor authentication, which adds an extra layer of security.”

Scott went on to explain that encrypting sensitive data is another important step. “Encryption scrambles your data so that even if it’s stolen, it’s unreadable without the decryption key,” he said.

“And remember to keep your software updated. Security patches often address vulnerabilities that hackers could exploit.”

SEO

We also touched on the importance of SEO for small businesses. “Having a well-optimized website is crucial for attracting customers online,” Scott noted.

“If you’re not showing up in search results, potential clients might not even know you exist.”

He recommended that businesses conduct keyword research and optimize their website content accordingly.

“Building high-quality backlinks from reputable sources is also essential for improving your search engine ranking,” Scott added.

Thanks to Scott Morris and Reno Computer Services for sharing this valuable information!
