“Certainly, Jessica. One crucial step is marshaling the estate assets,” Steve explains. “This involves a meticulous inventory of all the deceased person’s possessions – real estate, bank accounts, investments, vehicles, personal belongings, everything. It’s like piecing together a financial puzzle.”
“We then file an official Inventory and Appraisal with the court, detailing each asset’s value. Ordinarily, this process involves working closely with appraisers to accurately assess the worth of real estate, art, collectibles, and other valuables. It can be quite detailed work but essential for fair distribution of assets later on.”
Steve continues, “I recall one case where a family was surprised to discover a hidden collection of antique coins during the inventory process. The value of those coins significantly impacted the estate’s overall worth and ultimately changed how the assets were divided amongst the heirs.”
“Notwithstanding these occasional discoveries, it’s important for families to understand that open communication and honesty are crucial during this phase. Providing all necessary information about assets helps ensure a smooth probate process.” He adds, “According to the American Bar Association, approximately 20% of estates require formal probate proceedings.”
