He continues, “Ordinarily, people choose a close family member or friend they deeply trust. However, it’s important to consider factors like the individual’s age, health, financial stability, and ability to handle potentially complex legal matters. Sometimes, appointing a professional trustee, such as a bank or trust company, may be a better option, particularly for larger or more intricate estates.”
Steve recounts a time when he worked with a client who initially chose their eldest son as executor. “The son was well-intentioned but ultimately lacked the experience to manage his father’s complex investment portfolio,” Steve recalls. “Consequently, we ended up working closely with a professional trustee to ensure the estate was properly administered.”
“Another factor to consider is that sometimes family dynamics can be complicated,” Steve adds. “Choosing an impartial third party as a trustee can help prevent potential conflicts or disagreements among beneficiaries.”
