It’s funny, we spend so much time and energy crafting these meticulously detailed legal documents, but sometimes the most basic step – ensuring they can actually *be found* when needed – gets neglected. It’s like having a treasure map but forgetting where you hid it! Organizing and storing your documents properly isn’t just about neatness; it’s about accessibility, security, and preventing confusion and delays when your plan needs to be implemented.

Ideally, you want to keep the original documents in a secure yet accessible location—a fireproof safe is a good option, or a locked file cabinet. A lawyer’s office is also a common and secure choice, particularly for the most critical documents. It’s essential to create copies for your executor, trustee, and healthcare agent, so they have the information they need without having to hunt for the originals. We recommend maintaining a checklist or summary of your plan, listing all the key documents and their locations. This serves as a quick reference guide for your representatives.

We also advise clients to let their chosen representatives know *where* these documents are located. It’s no good if they have to spend days searching through boxes and drawers, trying to piece together your wishes. A simple conversation can save a tremendous amount of stress and frustration.

About Estate Planning Law – Ted Cook

Ted enjoys working with clients to create a custom estate plan to protect their assets and to make sure their wishes are reflected in their estate plan. He treats each client as an individual and takes pride in the level of service he provides.

Ted graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy and was commissioned an Ensign in the U.S. Navy. In the Navy, he was a Surface Warfare Officer and served on three ships on the West Coast. While in the Navy, Ted attended the University of San Diego School of Law where he received his Juris Doctrate degree in 1989. After law school, Ted continued his active duty service in the Navy as a Judge Advocate General Corps officer. After retiring from the Navy in 2011, Ted became a partner with Tom Henry in the law firm of Henry & Cook, LLP focusing on estate planning. Upon the passing of Tom Henry in 2022, Ted started his own firm and continues to help his clients create estate plans that are individually tailored to meet their needs.
